Work Experience

Students from West Berkshire Schools all have the opportunity to have a week's work experience during the last two years of their compulsory schooling (Years 10 and 11). Although this opportunity is not career related, it gives students an invaluable insight into the general world of work, and the opportunity to learn new skills and develop their independence and self- confidence.

We also place students on 'extended' work experience which gives them one or two days per week, over an academic year, in a work environment. This is often supported by a day in college and an individual school timetable.

The numbers certainly add up. We organise an average of 1700 block placements a year for pre-16 year old students and around 500 annual placements for post 16 year old students. In addition, last year we organised a total of 70 extended work placements.

Work experience is the most important link between employers and schools and colleges. Employers have a vital role to play in making education more work related and to develop the skills and attitudes which young people will need for their future working lives. Only in this way can we create a well trained and motivated future workforce.

Employers can use work experience programmes to promote the self esteem of staff and extend their skills by:

  • Acknowledging the value of passing on their knowledge and skills
  • Developing staff competencies through involvement in the preparation of students
  • Including work experience supervision within staff appraisal

We are fortunate to have around 700 active employers who are willing to take students - but we always need more!
