Our volunteers come from diverse business backgrounds. Here are just a few of them...

Master Craftsman

Director and joint owner of Hartwood Oak Buildings Ltd. We have been designing and making traditional green oak timber framed buildings and structures for over twenty years. We started out with just two of us and now employ fourteen craftsmen including two apprentices and a timber frame designer. Many of our heavy timber frame carpenters have come to us through doing work experience including more than six NVQ2 and NVQ3 apprentices.

HR Consultant

Providing help for small employers and sometimes individual employees through the minefield of employment law, practice, policy and procedure in an endeavour to stay employment tribunal free.

Artistic Director

I manage a small, creative team at one of the best arts centres for live music in the UK (Live UK Magazine 2014). I decide which acts to put on at the centre and then promote those events to ensure the highest possible attendance. I also curate exhibitions and teach drama to young deaf people.

Bodyshop Manager

I started as a panel technician when I was 16 and now I manage an accident repair garage repairing up to 100 vehicles per week.

Finance Analyst

I work in the Vodafone Finance UK Cash Management Team dealing with the accounting and reconciliation of all incoming cash transactions from our consumer customer base into our bank account on a daily basis. I have worked in Vodafone for 13 years in Research & Development, Tax, Terminals Stock, Commissions and now Cash. I’ve now been part of the Take a Chance programme for 4 years and it has been a very rewarding experience.

Chartered Engineer

I work in the field of Telecommunications for Vodafone where I develop technical solutions to deliver Voice Services. Over the years I have been an apprentice, an electrician, a college student and an undergraduate and have worked in some of the best (and worst) jobs available. I have experience of management and recruiting and am committed to personal development through continued education.

Human Resources Director

I am responsible for ensuring that the relevant and appropriate HR and payroll services are delivered on a timely basis to all areas of the Goodman UK business, including Recruitment, Development, Compensation and Benefits and general support and advice to the UK team. I have over 25 years’ experience in HR and an active member of the CIPD. Goodman is an integrated commercial and industrial property group that owns, develops and manages real estate including warehouses, large scale logistics facilities, business parks and offices globally.

Market Research Manager

I work for Vodafone in their market research team, mainly working with our business customers, all the way from one man bands to our massive corporate and public sector customers. It’s quite a diverse role which is really challenging and covers a multitude of subjects. One day I can be looking at the effectiveness of our advertising and another day doing research on a new product we’re thinking about launching. Prior to working in market research I worked in Vodafone’s customer service area. I started as an operator doing directory enquiries and ended my customer service days by managing some of the companies who do our customer service for us.

Infrastructure Operations Lead

I am an IT Infrastructure strategist working for GradWeb, the UK’s leading graduate, entry-level and volume recruitment specialist. We help many of the world’s highest profile employers manage their strategic and tactical volume recruitment campaigns to recruit the talent they need.

Day Nursery Manager

I joined Tigers as a student 17 years ago and have been employed by Tigers for 15 years. I have worked my way through various roles and I am now the Nursery Manager. I now support students and volunteers in our setting to gain childcare qualifications and get experience to help them to decide if this is the career path they wish to take.

Graduate

I am part of the 2013 graduate scheme at Vodafone and the role of Giving Something Back Specialist in HR is my year-long placement. I manage numerous aspects of our Giving Something Back policy and employee proposition, including individual volunteering programmes. My previous roles in the graduate scheme have included Financial Analyst and User Experience Specialist. I have volunteered my time in some capacity since I was 14, when I started to teach at my local swimming club – something that I do to this day. Being the first member of my family to attend university, I know how important it is to have a wealth of experience behind you, in addition to schooling, that you can use to your advantage when applying for university and jobs in the future. Take a Chance is a great volunteering option in my opinion because it really equips young adults with skills not learnt in schools. The workshops are really interesting and engaging and make students think ‘outside the box’, while also encouraging them to network and become more comfortable with unfamiliar social situations.
