Primary School Students learn ‘Numbers at Work’
Date issued: 20/07/10
On 29th June 2010, 32 enthusiastic Curridge Primary School pupils had the opportunity practice their numeracy skills in a new way. The pupils took on a math’s trail kindly hosted by Sainsbury’s store in Newbury and organised by the Education Business Partnership West Berkshire. They explored the different departments gathering information, comparing weights, sizes, prices and temperatures of produce as well as looking at the country of origin of fresh fruit and vegetables and what was in season. The pupils worked diligently through their trail and enjoyed a well earned refreshment break in the café at the store.
Clare Panico, deputy store manager:
‘We are always looking for different ways to support the local community so when the Education Business Partnership West Berkshire contacted us about Numbers at Work we were very happy to help. The pupils from Curridge School have been very well behaved in the store today and I hope that they have enjoyed the session”
The aim of the event was to increase the pupil’s enthusiasm and interest in Mathematics, Geography and Science and learn to apply these to real life situations. It is hoped that this activity will help to improve their calculation skills and raise the standards of attainment in these subjects. Perhaps with their new found knowledge they may even be able to help more with the shopping.
