    World of Work Celebration 2010

    Date issued: 12/03/10

Students from Park House, The Willink and Little Heath School, collected their ASDAN certificates from The Mayor of Thatcham Cllr. Stephanie Steevenson at a prestigious event held by the Education Business Partnership West Berkshire.
On Wednesday the 10th March at the Hilton Newbury Centre Hotel students on the World of Work (WOW) programme received their ASDAN Foundation for Work certificate in the company of honoured guests, teaching staff and parents.
Launched in September 2007, the WOW programme provides West Berkshire students access to a wide range of opportunities to increase their employability skills. The programme is designed to build on their confidence, self-esteem and social and communication skills.
The ASDAN Foundation for Work certificate is one of the key features of WOW. The students work towards this qualification by building a CV and personal statement, learning interview skill techniques and visits to local businesses.
Joe Slevin, WOW co-ordinator from Park House School, spoke to those present about the impact the WOW programme has had on the students involved. A parent of a Park House student described how her son’s “focus, enthusiasm and interest in school has increased ten fold” due to taking part in the WOW programme.
During the two year course students took part in a fantastic range of activities which included orienteering, archery and team building. They also worked with the RAF and toured local colleges and businesses as well as undertaking work experience placements across West Berkshire.

Lyn Heaver, WOW Project Officer, from the EBP said “Congratulations to all students receiving their ASDAN qualification today. We wish them every success as they continue their journey into the world of work.”
