Cheam Enrichment Day
Date issued: 31/03/10
On Wednesday 17th March, Year 7 students from Cheam School, Newbury, took part in a range of Enterprise Activities with support and guidance from local businesses.
Organised by the Education Business Partnership West Berkshire, students embarked on three activities which tested their creativity, communication, team work and organisational skills.
Georgina Curtis-Read, Staffing Manager at Newbury Racecourse challenged the students with a maths based activity focusing on Corporate Hospitality, while Sam Sampson, Learning and Participation Officer at the Corn Exchange challenged the students to design a new event for the New Greenham Arts Centre.
Kier Moss supported the ‘Take Cover’ activity where students built a shelter using Stixx rods and learnt about building and construction. Philippa Higgs, Project Coordinator at Kier Moss, said “It was great to see the pupils from Cheam School put the learning from their syllabus into practical use and they picked up the principals of the exercise remarkably quickly. All of the team exercises were a complete success and their problem solving and design skills were very impressive. It was a pleasure to work with the pupils; the volunteers from Kier Moss had a most rewarding and enjoyable day. Hopefully we have even encouraged a few future engineers!”
Melanie Rosier-Watt, Project Officer at the EBP said “Through our exciting, engaging activities students learnt to consider real business challenges. Our volunteers from local business were enthusiastic, helpful and very professional, giving the students an insight into the real world of work.”
