How can Parents help?
You too can help by:
- Taking an interest in your son or daughter's placement and talking with them about what they would like to do, bearing in mind their interest and aptitude
- Emphasising to them that the work placement is intended as a broad experience of work and the opportunity to acquire skills that will be of use in a variety of occupations
- Encouraging your son or daughter to have a positive approach to the placement opportunity
- Making sure that all the necessary forms and paperwork are completed properly and returned promptly
- Ensuring your son or daughter can travel to and from the placement safely
- Notifying school and employer in case of illness
The above applies not just for work experience placements but for all the activities designed by EBP West Berks to build up your child's understanding and preparation for their future working life.
Benefits
As a parent you are almost certainly employed yourselves and are very aware of the importance of preparing our young people for their future employability. Getting involved through work or as an individual is extremely valuable and has fantastic outcomes both for you and for the young students that are helped. The work of the EBP can be called Corporate Community Involvement or Corporate Social Responsibility. Others refer to their company's Community Investment or Employee Engagement. It all comes back to the same thing - the desire to make a positive difference to the local community where your business operates and your employees live and work.
Employee or individual volunteering in schools, in particular, is a tangible and practical way to give something valuable back to your community by:
- supporting the insights and skills development of young people and our future workforce
- having an influence on young people, their attitudes, understanding and skills
- giving an opportunity to staff to train their communication skills with young people
- seeking the insights and voice of young people/consumers
What better way to ensure that your future employees will meet your expectations. This, along with the satisfaction of seeing a GCSE or A level student get better grades than expected thanks to your mentoring or someone just there to listen, is what it is all about.
And, last, but not least, it is rewarding - and fun!
