EBPWB - GCSE Health and Social Care - Unit 1


	AIMS To enable the students to explore the job descriptions and codes of conduct within an ICU team. To encourage research into job descriptions and codes of conduct. OUTCOMES To resolve the actions that each individual within the ICU team take in a variety of situations. To identify how codes of conduct protect the client in the ICU.

SETTING THE SCENE
	RUNNING THE WORKSHOP Discuss with the group the following facts about ICU. Encourage them to talk about their own experiences and the various soaps. (ER is highly rated by Reading ICU as being more realistic).
	Facts about ICU A hospital may have an intensive care unit with 8 patients at any one time. This could vary considerably depending on many factors. In general an ICU nurse is assigned to each patient. The team on any one shiftwill have a skill mix ensuring that the most qualified and experienced nurses are working alongside the less qualified and experienced nurses who may be in training. The nurses are supported by a team of resuscitation trainers and an anaesthetist who are on call in the event of a heart or respiratory failure
	TASK A - INTRODUCTIONS Explain that the group is to be divided into teams of six. Mix up the students by giving them a number or fruit name to indicate which group they are in. The team must sit in a circle or around a desk. Each person will be given a role (see resources) including a job description and a short list of codes of conduct. Ask the lead Manager Nurse to run the session. Each member of the group must introduce themselves by name to the others and describe their role title and job description.

	TASK B - SCENARIOS The group will be given a set of scenarios by the Lead Nurse Manager. Each member will be asked how they would respond if they were following their codes of conduct. Encourage the group to discuss their roles and replies. Roles for the students A teacher may take on a role and lead the session if possible. G Grade Lead Nurse Manager - must lead the session S Grade Senior Staff Nurse E Grade Staff Nurse D Grade Nurse Anaesthetist Resuscitation Trainer

	TASK - EXTENSION Discuss with students that their assignment for Unit One will be based on a health care professional and that they must research the job description and the codes of conduct for that person. How does the job of that individual fit into the role of the organisation? How do the codes of conduct protect the clients? Use ICU as an example for discussion.

	G GRADE LEAD NURSE MANAGER JOB DESCRIPTION To take charge of the ICU CODES OF CONDUCT To delegate responsibility to the team. To ensure the duty rota is complete and that the skill mix is acceptable. To train less qualified nurses. To support and ensure the team are following their codes of conduct.



	S GRADE SENIOR STAFF NURSE JOB DESCRIPTION To take charge of the ICU or to support the Lead Nurse Manager in doing so CODES OF CONDUCT To ensure the duty rota is complete and that the skill mix is acceptable. To train less qualified nurses. To support and ensure the team are following their codes of conduct.



	E GRADE STAFF NURSE JOB DESCRIPTION To care for patients on the ICU CODES OF CONDUCT To monitor constantly the vital signs of the patients on the ICU. To call for support immediately when it is required. To ensure all medication is given correctly at the right time and quantity. To seek advice and support from more qualified and experienced nurses when it is needed. To give advice and support to less qualified and experienced staff.



	D GRADE NURSE JOB DESCRIPTION To care for patients on the ICU CODES OF CONDUCT To monitor constantly the vital signs of the patients on the ICU. To call for support immediately when it is required. To ensure all medication is given correctly at the right time and quantity. To seek advice and support from more qualified and experienced nurses when it is needed. To provide support to other members of the team when it is needed.



	ANAETHETIST (DOCTOR) JOB DESCRIPTION Responsible for the consciousness level of patients in ICU CODES OF CONDUCT To ensure the patients are kept unconscious or out of pain by prescribing the correct medication and treatment. To assist and advise during the resuscitation of a patient. To respond immediately to a call for ICU.



	RESUSCITATION TRAINER JOB DESCRIPTION To train and assist the nurses in the ICU in the resuscitation of patients CODES OF CONDUCT To train and assist the nurses in the ICU in the resuscitation of patients To respond immediately to a call for ICU. To assist and advise during the resuscitation of a patient. To train nurses in the ICU in resuscitation.

Scenario 1
	A new D Grade Nurse starts on the ICU today


Scenario 2
	A D Grade nurse is responsible for a patient who needs to be moved for surgery. At least 3 nurses will be required


Scenario 3
	A Staff nurse gets the message that another Staff nurse has called in sick with food poisoning and cannot attend the next shift


Scenario 4
	A patient goes into heart failure. This is first noticed by the D Grade Nurse


Scenario 5
	A patient is complaining of being in pain despite already being given their usual painkillers


Scenario 6
	A D Grade nurse is uncertain which medication to give a patient as the doctor's writing is unclear
