| SETTING THE SCENE |
 |
There are many exercises that can be used to prepare the group for a visit to a local health centre to maximise the experience:
- keeping a daily diet for a week and studying a balanced diet.
- getting each student to produce their own fitness indicators sheet including Body Mass Index (BMI), recovery time, lung capacity, heart rate at rest, blood pressure (if possible), peak flow etc.
- studying different forms of exercise, which are appropriate for various client groups.
- designing their own health centre membership form with personal details, health risks, indicators of health, targets etc.
- drawing up questions about the health centre and the staff.
It is not vital to cover any of these topics before the visit and it may serve to introduce the unit to the group or re-enforce and extend work already done. |
|
| ORGANISING THE VISIT |
 |
Discussion
It is essential that the visit is discussed in detail between the teacher and the person co-ordinating the visit. (eg the EBP)
The two main aims described at the top of this page are the focus of the visit, however, many
aspects of health including diet and life style will be touched on.
Time
Half a day is more than enough time (approximately 3 hours). |
|
| SUGGESTED ITINERARY |
 |
A meeting
Introductions. Very important, name labels are often a good idea to help the presenters and staff interact with the group. The centre may provide them.
A description of the health centre, its facilities, membership and staff.
457The career path of the person presenting to the students.
A tour
A rapid wander around.
Meeting other members of staff who are able to confidently describe their role, career path. |

Indicators of Fitness
Ask the health centre to present a short session to talk about how fitness is measured and monitored in the health centre.
Try to make this as practical as possible e.g. by getting the students to measure their own heart rates particularly if the centre have several electronic monitors. Equally they could do other physical forms of fitness tests e.g. the beep test or counting the number of sit-ups or press-ups that they can do. They may need kit for this session.
A short aerobic session, measuring heart rate before and after and recording recovery time.
They will need kit, towel and a water bottle for this session.
Ask for a short description of how exercise improves health before, during or after the aerobic session. Focusing on circulation, ventilation and energy consumption.
Any questions |
|
| |
A break
Most health centres will have some form of café. The centre may provide free refreshments.
Ask the students to bring their own or some money.
This is another opportunity for staff members to chat to the students, particularly if there are members of the group interested in this line of work. It is a good idea to find out who they are before arriving. |
|
 |
Balanced diet and heart disease
Ask the health centre to present a short session on a balanced diet and heart disease.
Ask the students to write down what they eat the day before and use them as case studies.
Using case studies of clients who have been referred to the health centre by their GP is also much more interesting when coupled with the health plan that is put in place for that individual. Obviously their names need not be used to protect their confidentiality.
Ask the health centre for examples of their monitoring sheets which the students can fill out on themselves.
Any questions. |
|
| |
DE-BRIEF
Any other questions.
Guest passes are often available to the students so that they can visit and use the facilities another time. This is very good promotion for the health centre.
Give the students an opportunity to thank the presenter/s. |
|
 |
EXTENSION
The students must choose a person, preferably an adult, to base their assignment upon. They must select several measures of health for their chosen individual. They must construct a health plan for their chosen individual with short term and long term targets.
