Teachers
EBP West Berks work closely with all ten of the local state secondary schools along with Newbury College, some special schools and the Pupil Referral Units. Our links with the business community range from multinationals Vodafone and Bayer through to smaller local organisations such as Newbury Crash Repair and Hartwood Oak.
We aim to support your role as a teacher to give all young people of the region a practical introduction to the world of work to help them make more informed decisions about their future. We support students at all levels to keep them engaged in education and to raise their aspirations for whatever path they choose.
To achieve this, working in partnership with both schools and business, we have created a range of exciting programmes which support the curriculum and set out to broaden the knowledge of both teachers and students about different working practices and environments. These include:
- Organisation of Work Experience placements for young people aged 14-19 through one or two week block placements or extended placements
- Delivery of Work Related Learning Events through activities such as enterprise skills development challenges, mentoring and employer led presentations
- Creation of mentoring programmes - reading buddies, number partners, business mentors for students, teachers or head teachers
- Alternative Curriculum support for vulnerable and disaffected young people - such as the World of Work programme
- Projects with primary schools - including citizenship events and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) activities
- Encouraging teacher and industrial exchanges (PDP) to raise teacher awareness of the world of work, the work-related curriculum and continuous professional development
Your feedback is invariably positive - here's what teachers said about the last Languages @ Work Day for KS5 students studying French or German.
"A good informative day - helpful to put languages in context of work rather than just lessons. Would do this again!" and "The day definitely exceeded my expectations".
While Dave Cath from Kennet School has this to say about a recent Radio Skills Day:
"Our Year 10s have been involved in this day twice now and the event is turning into one of the learning highlights of the year for the English Department. The very high levels of involvement right across the ability range is one of the most striking features ... and the way the pupils themselves talk about the day afterwards is the real measure: they have always spoken about "learning" and "enjoyment" in the same breath - praise indeed!"
It is also an exciting time for enterprise education in West Berkshire with local programmes such as Take a Chance now underway and the web-based PET (Personal Effectiveness Tool) now available to monitor the outcomes of entrepreneurial training.
We hope that this website will give you a useful overview of our range of programmes. Take a look at the programme activities, the case studies and the news to see how we can support you both in and outside the classroom. We also welcome hearing any new ideas you may have for future projects so do not hesitate to contact us.
